In this multicenter, phase III trial, the authors compared high-dose radiotherapy plus long-term androgen deprivation with high-dose radiotherapy plus short-term androgen deprivation in 355 patients with localized prostate cancer. Long-term androgen deprivation therapy resulted in better 5-year overall survival, metastasis-free survival, and biochemical disease–free survival compared with short-term androgen deprivation therapy. These outcomes were most evident in patients with high-risk disease.

The authors conclude that long-term androgen deprivation therapy plus high-dose radiotherapy is promising in patients with localized prostate cancer, especially those with high-risk disease.
