●       In 2012, slightly more than 9% of the US population had diabetes

●         Among individuals with Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and accounts for >75% of hospitalizations and >50% of all deaths

●        Women with T2DM experience a variety of adverse cardiovascular outcomes that are not widely known. These include that diabetic women:

●  Have heart attacks at earlier ages than non-diabetic men

●  Are likelier to die after a first heart attack than non-diabetic men

●   Are also less likely to have their blood sugar and blood pressure well controlled
